4 Essential Tips for Traveling with Sleep Apnea
October 1, 2022
With the holiday season rapidly approaching, you might be finalizing your travel plans for the next few upcoming months. And whether you’re going abroad, taking a trip down to the beach, or simply visiting family, you’ll want to be sure that you’ve thought of everything—including how to accommodate your sleep apnea condition while you’re traveling. But with a little preparation, your condition shouldn’t influence or be influenced by your travel plans at all! Here are some tips from your sleep dentist to help you out.
1. When Flying, Check Airline Guidelines
If you’re planning to travel by plane, you will need to pass through airport security and check your luggage, which is often easier said than done! There are some fairly strict rules and regulations about what can be taken through security and onto an airplane. To ensure that you don’t encounter any unexpected complications, you should check your carrier’s specific guidelines at least a few weeks prior to your departure. In general, CPAP machines and most oral appliances can be included in both carry-on bags and checked luggage.
2. Keep Your Prescription on Hand
If you’ve ever traveled during the holidays, you probably know just how busy things are! That said, even if you plan accordingly and everything seems to be going well, sometimes your luggage can still become lost. This means that if your CPAP machine or oral appliances were packed in your luggage, you’re going to need a plan B. You should carry your sleep apnea prescription with you in your purse or wallet, so that you’re covered in case your bags are lost. You might also consider carrying your equipment in a protective case within your carry-on bag.
3. Check the Power Supply
If you use a CPAP machine, you will need to make sure that you have a source of power at your destination. Keep in mind that some countries don’t use the same voltage or adapters as the U.S., so you’ll need to bring a universal power adapter with you if you’re going abroad. It might be useful to bring an extension cord with you, too.
4. Pack Carefully
In addition to packing your sleep apnea equipment, it’s important to also take all necessary cleaning products with you; not just your toothbrush and other teeth cleaning products, but also whatever you need to sanitize your oral appliance. Be sure to check the airline’s requirements for sizes and quantities that can be brought with you onto the plane. It never hurts to pack all of these items gently and carefully; after all, they play an important role in your overall health and wellness!
Your sleep apnea doesn’t have to complicate your travel plans; a little preparation and following these tips will ensure that you’re still able to get the rest you need, no matter where you are!
